The Via Ferrata of the Tofane

Astaldi trail

The Astaldi equipped route is one of the oldest via ferrata routes in the Ampezzo Valley.  Set in a stunning landscape of great geological interest, it runs along a ledge that crosses a Raibliano layer characterised by colourful rock strata in shades of red, grey, green and purple.

Giuseppe Olivieri equipped route

The Giuseppe Olivieri equipped route is reached by following a scree trail heading North from the Pomedes hut. The equipped section starts by the rocky Pomedes towers and climbs rapidly, traversing gullies and rock-walls, reaching Ra Valles after about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

To descend, follow the ski slopes to get to the Freccia nel Cielo cable car which brings you back to Cortina.

Via ferrata Giuseppe Olivieri - Punta Anna

Doubtless one of the most fascinating equipped routes in the Dolomites, it offers great satisfaction not only for its verticality and exposure, but also for its sheer beauty, with unforgettable views of Mount Tofana di Rozes and beyond. This itinerary, inaugurated in 1972, begins just above the Pomedes hut, at the base of Punta Anna, and climbs along the ridge until reaching the summit at 2,731m. From here, one can descend by ledge and scree to the Giussani hut, or continue along the ridge to Bus de Tofana to reach the trail that links Ra Valles with the Giussani hut.

Via ferrata ‘Gianni Aglio’- Tofana di Mezzo

This itinerary allows excursionists to ascend the tallest of the three Tofane peaks. Done in combination with the Giuseppe Oliveri ferrata route, it constitutes a long and demanding traverse, representing a truly satisfying challenge for those with a high level of fitness. The descent can be made along the old ferrata line, returning to Bus di Tofana, or in high season, by cable car.

Via ferrata ‘Giovanni Lipella’ - Tofana di Rozes

A splendid journey into the heart of the Dolomites and the history of the Great War, which saw some its most tragic and memorable pages written here. Starting from the Pomedes hut, follow the Astaldi equipped route until it intersects trail n. 404 at the base of the majestic Mount Tofana di Rozes. The via ferrata starts with the long Castelletto tunnel and ends at Tre Dita (three fingers) rock formation. From here, you can continue your ascent to reach the summit of Tofana di Rozes, or descend to the Giussani hut.

Ra Pegna and Ra Bujela

These brand new via ferrata routes on Mount Tofana, are set on the two iconic rock formations that frame the famous Schuss ski slope.  They are both relatively short, easy to access, and at the same time interesting and panoramic, making them ideal for days with uncertain weather. Both routes are suitable for beginners and children, especially Ra Pegna, which was created as an entry-level via ferrata experience.

IMPORTANT ADVICE: FOR YOUR SAFETY, Via ferrata routes require the use of APPROPRIATE safety equipment, as well as mountain experience and knowledge of local conditions.
